We did notice however that the majority of people have their faces in their phones ALL THE TIME, even couples that are there together spend more time on their phones than talking to each other. Hot spots like JR’s, Sue Ellen’s, Station 4, TMC, Woody’s, Havana, and Round-Up Saloon have been closed since their short-lived reopen back in June. Knockout and Pegasus have been the friendliest. Definitely not as pretentious as Dallas and Austin. The second time, people were making faces, snide side comments and being generally cunty. First time, everyone was super nice chatty and welcoming. The husband and I just moved here in August and we've had two very different experiences on the little gay strip. San Antonio feels more like a spread out town at times rather than a city. Austin has a much larger scene than San Antonio and in Texas terms isn’t that far of a drive (guesstimating 1h30 +/- depending on traffic and location). Keep in mind that the city is spread out so meeting people is kinda relegated to the apps if you're not interested in the bar scene, and even then I’d wager it's easier on the apps than in the bars. Of course there are bars and areas I wouldn't go to, but that's more to do with general issues and not specifically homophobia.
Safety wise I’d say it's a generally safe community, even outside of the strip. I know a few years back that San Antonio was found to have a pretty high population of lgbtq parents, so that’s something. Honestly I’m not sure if there’s any gay sports leagues if you’re into that but for the most part bar hopping was mainly what my friends and I had done. The scene is much more relaxed than Dallas, and the bars reflect that, but I’m sure you can find a gaggle of queens smoking on the back patio of the heat acting uppity. Haven’t been out in forever (2ish years) but there is a gay strip, so the main 4 bars the heat, sparky’s, Pegasus, and knockout are all on the same road right next to each other.
